Phantom of the Opera Makes Rare Character Appearance at Universal Studios Hollywood on Halloween

A lesser-known member of the Universal Monsters crew stalked the Upper Lot at Universal Studios Hollywood on Halloween: the Phantom of the Opera.

Phantom of the Opera at Universal Studios for Halloween

A rare character for both Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal Monsters, the Phantom of the Opera emerged on the Upper Lot on Halloween for daytime guests celebrating the holiday. Inside Universal shared a Reel of the character set to the overture from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical of the same name.

While Universal’s Phantom of the Opera character is normally based on the Lon Chaney version from the 1925 film, this Phantom has a fairly original appearance. He is dressed in black-tie attire, with a tuxedo and a dramatic black cape lined in white, accessorized with white gloves and a broad-brimmed black hat.

This Phantom is missing his signature mask, so his scarred face is fully visible (although the character attempts to conceal himself with his cape). The prosthetics also cover most of his face, as opposed to just one half.

The prosthetic work is even more impressive up close, resembling that of The Ghoul scareactor from Halloween Horror Nights 2025’s Fallout house. The Phantom’s nose has been cut off, the left side of his face is heavily scarred with a sunken whiteout eye, and the right side has been burned down to exposed muscle with a bloodshot, staring lidless eyeball. His teeth are also visible on the right side.

The Phantom of the Opera in Universal Parks

While not as popular as his other Dark Universe counterparts, The Phantom of the Opera is featured in one of the early scenes of Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment in Universal’s Epic Universe. Universal Studios Beijing also includes the character (but aesthetically based on his Broadway counterpart) in its annual Universal Monsters Crypt haunted house at Halloween Horror Nights.
