Two of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opossums are back at the Magic Kingdom attraction after being removed during refurbishment.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Opossums
Two opossums are back on their tree but neither is hanging over the ride track, as Walt Disney Imagineering revealed on November 3. One opossum stands on the branch and the other is on the tree trunk. Imagineering said, “Mom and dad opossum are back, with the rest of the family returning soon.”

The animals were removed during the ride’s year-long refurbishment. They did not return when the roller coaster reopened earlier this year due to a clearance issue.
When Disney tested the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride envelope, the opossums breached the safety zone around the ride vehicle and passengers. Disney did not have time to correct the issue before reopening but promised the opossums would be back.

In October, Walt Disney Imagineering filed a permit indicating that the opossums would soon return. The permit contracted Icarus Exhibits, Inc. to “Install set elements” at the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad address. Icarus Exhibits worked on other Big Thunder Mountain Railroad set pieces.
While mom and dad are back on the tree, the opossum babies still have yet to return. There were two that swung by their tails with one of their parents from a tree branch, while another parent looked on from atop a different branch. We don’t know if the babies will still hang from the branch or if they will also have to move to new positions on the tree.
