REVIEW: People Keep Paying $52 for Mediocre Barbecue in Disney World and I Know Why

REVIEW: People Keep Paying for Mediocre Barbecue in Disney World and I Know Why

When it comes to dining at Disney World, you’ve got so many options. Especially when you are looking to try some fun themed dining! However, with these experiences, it’s difficult to know if the quality of food will match the theming. Or if it’s not worth the time on your visit.

Toy Story Land!

We recently stopped by Roundup Rodeo BBQ at Hollywood Studios, and now we’re bringing you our FULL review. Is it worth a stop in Andy’s backyard on your next trip to the Most Magical Place on Earth? Let’s find out!

Atmosphere

In this restaurant, you enter the world of Andy’s toys as they throw a full-blown rodeo celebration! That theme starts as you approach the restaurant and see a sign pieced together by Andy himself.

Then, as you make your way further in, you can see that Andy has left a welcome sign for all the rodeo fans about to enter the festivities.

Welcome sign!

As soon as you enter the building, you are immediately hit with that classic Toy Story Land immersive theming with so many details everywhere. The whole space really makes it feel as though you have been shrunk down to the size of a toy.

Love this theming!

If you look at the walls, you can spot facades for all the buildings in the town, including the hotel, sheriff’s office, school, and more!

All the buildings!

You can also spot Bo Peep herding her sheep.

Hi Bo Peep!

As well as cutouts of some of your favorite characters throughout the restaurant.

Woody and Zurg

The details extend all the way to the ceiling with a galaxy design, and you can even see a track for a toy train that Andy has propped on the wall with colored pencils.

It’s a train!

You could spend hours in this restaurant and keep noticing more details. The space truly makes you feel immersed in the world of Andy’s toys!

It’s a hotel!

But enough about the restaurant — what’s on the menu here?!

Menu

At Roundup Rodeo BBQ, there is a pre-fixe menu full of western food and BBQ favorites.

Menu!

The menu starts with the bread service, salads, then the main platters where you can choose either a meat or plant-based option.

First half of the menu

Looking at the lower half of the menu, you can find a selection of sides as well as desserts. The desserts come out individually, so each person at the table can choose one they would like to try.

And now, onto the main event — the food!

Eats

We grabbed the BBQ Meat Platter for $52 per adult. The first item we tried was the Cheddar Biscuits, which come with sweet pepper jelly. These were flaky with a decent texture, although we did notice the jelly was needed to add a little bit of moisture. These were a really nice way to start the meal, but we wish they would have come with some sort of butter. The sweet pepper jelly was very tasty but might not be a crowd-pleaser, especially for younger kids, so having a butter option would have taken this bread to the next level.

Next, we moved onto the salad options, starting with the Rootin’ Tootin Tomato Salad made with cucumbers, Pickled Red Onion, and white balsamic vinaigrette. We really enjoyed this salad quite a bit! There was a lot of vinegar, and the tomatoes were really well marinated. The cucumbers and red onions also worked really well here. This was a great, refreshing salad, which was amazing to have on the table when so much of this meal is very rich. In fact, we recommend saving some of the salad until your main platter arrives.

We also tried Wheezy’s Fruit Salad, which was watermelon. But again, when you are having a very meat-heavy meal, some nice, refreshing watermelon is a great addition to the table, plus it was perfectly ripe and sweet.

Next, we tried Slinky Doooooooooog’s Mac & Cheese. The pasta here was very well cooked, but we wish there had been more cheese sauce throughout. The cheese sauce that was there was fantastic, but more would have really taken this to the next level. Overall, this was very good and will definitely be a fan-favorite side.

Another we tried was The Claw! Veggie Slaw. This was unfortunately our least favorite item on the menu. It did not have a great texture, and felt a bit limp under the weight of the dressing. The tomato salad was much better if you’re looking for a refreshing bite on the table.

The Claw! Veggie Slaw

Next up were the Potato Barrels. These were fairly plain in taste but cooked very well with a great crispy exterior. We can see these being a fan favorite for any kids at the table! We also tried the Cowpoke Corn on the Cob, which is grilled street corn. This might have been our favorite item on the platter! It was incredibly well cooked, and you could taste the fire from the grill. There was a perfect amount of cheese, and these were an amazing side to accompany the richness of the meat.

The last side we got was the Buckin’ Baked Beans. These were smoky with bits of burnt ends and were very good! They were well cooked, and the sauce was really tasty. While we would prioritize trying some of the other items on the platter, they were still a great addition to the meal.

Now, on to the main event: the Meat Platter! This came with Evil Dr. Smoked Pork Ribs, Buttercup’s Beef Brisket, There’s a Sausage in my Boot – Smoked Pork Sausage, and BBQ Chicken – with Style! Starting with the Brisket, which was our least favorite meat on the platter. It was unfortunately pretty dry; the flavor was decent, but it really relied on sauces to help with both the flavor and dryness of the meat.

Meat Platter

The chicken was surprisingly well cooked with a lot of juice and really great spices. We didn’t even need to add any spices to this one since it was so well seasoned and spiced. This was really amazing! Then the smoked sausage was fantastic, with an amazing flavor and a great snap. Once again, the seasoning was so good we did not need any extra sauce!

Meat Platter

Now, the Pork Ribs were our favorite meat on the platter! They had an amazing flavor where you could really taste the smoke, plus the spice rub and bark on the exterior brought an amazing sweetness that balanced everything out.

Lastly, for dessert we chose the Goat’s Banana Cream Pie. This dessert was slightly disappointing. We were hoping there would be bits of actual banana here, but it leaned slightly more artificial in taste. The size here was also extremely small, but this would probably be something kids or pickier eaters would enjoy. However, if you’re looking for an authentic Banana Cream Pie, that is not what you’ll find here.

Nosh or Not

This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…

  • You or anyone in your group loves Toy Story. There is no denying that this is an incredible spot to visit if you are a Toy Story fan. The level of immersion and detail is truly incredible, and the interactive moments, like when they yell, “Andy’s Coming,” and the whole restaurant freezes, really are what make this such a special place to grab a meal.
  • You want large portions for the price. If you are looking for a spot where you can get a lot of food, then this is a great option. The portions are really large, and they come with so many sides that there is plenty of food to go around.
  • You are catering to a bigger group or pickier eaters. The food on this menu is pretty basic barbecue, with not a lot of unique flavors. Which means that it is a great spot to visit if you are worried about pleasing a larger group or if you have any kiddos who are pickier eaters and do not want to try more adventurous options.

You should skip this Disney World spot if…

  • You are looking for amazing barbecue. While the food here is decent, it is not the best barbecue you’ll find at Disney World. If you want to visit this restaurant for the great theming and all you care about is the food being decent, then that’s what you’ll find here. But we wouldn’t recommend visiting this spot if you are looking for exceptional barbecue.
  • You want a more unique menu. While a basic menu with limited options is a pro if you are traveling with picky eaters, if you are hoping to try some really fun and unique offerings on your Disney World vacation, then this is not the spot to visit.
  • You don’t care about Toy Story or fun theming. The biggest draw to visiting this spot is not the food, but really is the incredible theming. So, if that theming doesn’t matter to you, then you might be disappointed by the overall experience of dining at this restaurant.

Overall

This is one of those Disney World restaurants that you visit because the theming, atmosphere, and immersion are all incredible, not because of the food. With that being said, we still really enjoy visiting Roundup Rodeo BBQ and think the theming does make this spot worth it for some guests. Also, while the food is not out of this world, it was still pretty good, and if you love Toy Story, the theming more than makes up for the quality of the food!
