Monstropolis Makeover Continues with Archway Framework and Monster-Themed Façades at Hollywood Studios

Our latest visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios offers a closer look at the architectural theming work underway throughout the future Monstropolis area.

Monstropolis Construction Update

Our latest visit to Disney's Hollywood Studios offers a closer look at the architectural theming work underway throughout the future Monstropolis area.

The former Muppets Courtyard continues its transformation into the city from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. Some building fronts now feature extensive scenic finishes, while neighboring sections remain exposed or surrounded by work platforms.

Along the former PizzeRizzo building, which will become Archie’s Scare Pig Pizza, a row of curved metal frames outlines the arches beneath an overhang. Smaller rectangular sections connect the arches to the horizontal framework above, creating a repeating pattern along the elevated terrace.

Gaps beneath the roof edge expose additional structural components, and loose wiring hangs beside several supports. Green railings remain along the terrace, with construction materials staged behind them. Tall rectangular concrete columns stand in front of this section. Their surfaces remain unfinished.

Behind the terrace, the restaurant’s tan exterior features a weathered appearance, including branching cracks and patches of exposed brick. Star-shaped wall accents remain visible above the overhang. Interior-facing windows also remain uncovered and unadorned.

In our last update, scaffolding removal revealed more of the neighboring restroom building. The latest photos provide closer views of the exposed terrace framework and the unfinished columns standing in front of it.

Beside the restaurant, the former Gonzo’s Royal Flush restroom building is largely unobstructed by scaffolding. Its red brick exterior features cream-colored trim resembling teeth, pointed accents around the arched openings, and brown riveted decorative elements.

These details build on the work covered in our mid-October construction update, when painters were adding mortar lines and weathered finishes to the brickwork and window surrounds.

The steep gable facing Grand Avenue features blue-green shingles with scattered tan and brown coloring. Cream-colored spikes follow the sloping roof edges, while another row of tooth-like trim stretches across the façade beneath the gable.

The latest views show pale mortar lines across the courtyard-facing brickwork. Several arched openings remain covered with orange-brown panels, while another is uncovered, exposing a pale interior surface.

Faded yellow “TRY OUR CANS” lettering remains visible on the brick wall below. White “Public Restrooms” lettering is also visible on the green overhang at the building’s base.

Deeper into the construction area, multiple levels of scaffolding continue to surround other structures’ façades. Pale trim and pointed rooftop details peek through the work platforms, while a temporary staircase provides access to the upper levels.

Additional views show scaffolding extending around a curved roofline of the future Glob Theater, with crane booms rising behind the buildings.

Our Halloween aerial update documented extensive scaffolding, fountain construction, and work along the future pedestrian routes. These latest ground-level photos show the contrast between the some of the more finished exteriors and the still-unfinished structures nearby.

Monstropolis at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Monstropolis is currently being constructed on the site of the former Muppets Courtyard and will open in phases beginning next year, though no opening date has been announced. Mama Melrose’s will become Harryhausen’s, a restaurant visited by characters in the first Monsters, Inc. Read more about the land’s shopping and dining venues.
