ALL of the Attractions That Will Be Closed for Refurbishment in Disney World Next Week

Planning ahead can help you on your road to a stress-free vacation to Disney World!

Drained Rivers of America

Before heading to the theme parks, it’s helpful to know what attractions are closed. This will help you plan around the closures and ensure you’re not too disappointed when you arrive. We’re back with a refurbishment update to inform you of all the attractions that will be closed for refurb this week. Let’s take a look at the refurb schedule from January 11th through January 17th, 2021.

Magic Kingdom Refurbishments

Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover

The PeopleMover saga continues! Our story begins in July when we were expecting the attraction to reopen with the rest of the Magic Kingdom. The ride remained closed for several days and we continued to check back on its progress. Eventually, it was put on the official refurbishment calendar. The closure was extended through December then again through January 10th.

Closed PeopleMover

We were so looking forward to January 10th, but recently Disney changed the refurbishment end date once again. The refurbishment schedule has been extended through January 30th, 2021. Hopefully, this will be the final extension, but we’ll keep you updated as we learn more!

Tom Sawyer Island and Liberty Square Riverboat

The Rivers of America has been completely drained to allow for refurbishment in and around the area. It’s not completely appealing to see a dried-up riverbed in the middle of Frontierland but we shouldn’t have to see it this way for much longer.

Empty Rivers of America

The two attractions affected by the drained river are Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat. While the river is dry, the boat can’t make its daily tours. And, guests can’t board the island without taking a raft over. As of right now, the refurbishment is expected to last through February 28th, 2021.

Walt Disney World Railroad

The Magic Kingdom railroad has been closed for a couple years now. The closure is due to the massive construction site for TRON Lightcycle Run. The roller coaster will be located towards the exterior of the Magic Kingdom by Space Mountain. The construction has interrupted the train’s pathway through Tomorrowland.

Main Street Train Station

The train could start running close to the time TRON opens. It’s unclear how long the construction will continue, however. The roller coaster was originally set to debut in October 2021 and the project has been delayed. We’ll inform you about the train’s reopening schedule when we get more details!

Animal Kingdom Refurbishment

Kali River Rapids

Disney World is known to temporarily close water attractions when the temperatures cool down. Kali River Rapids has been closed for several months in the past and the same is happening this year. (The tubing ride is known to get guests wet and can sometimes soak them to the core.) The water ride is currently closed for refurbishment and will remain so through April 1st, 2021.

Kali River Rapids Closed

We totally get that there are some brave souls who want to experience a wet ride in January. Splash Mountain is currently open and will gladly let you get soaked!

You’ll also notice multiple construction sites littered throughout Disney World. EPCOT is a construction war zone as it prepares for its massive transformation. Over at Disney’s Polynesian Village, the resort is getting a big overhaul too. Plus, you may notice that the Main Street Train Station looks a little different these days!
