A Behind the Scenes Look at a Day in the Life of a Disney Food Blog Writer!

Here at DFB we LOVE to give you the inside scoop or behind-the-scenes look at ALL things Disney. Want a behind-the-scenes peek at EPCOT’s new nighttime spectacular? You got it! Want to know about some of the SECRETS behind your favorite Disney rides? No problem!

What a Beautiful View

But now we’re pulling back the curtain on something much closer to home. Today, we’re giving you an exclusive look at what it’s like to be a part of the Disney Food Blog team! Ever wonder what it’s like to write articles about Disney all day? What did some of our writers do before they joined our team? You’ve got questions, and we’ve got ANSWERS!

Recently, one of our writers took over our Instagram stories to answer ALL of your questions about what it’s like to be a writer at DFB. Spoiler alert: that writer was ME! Ngl I felt very famous. You DFB readers are the bomb!

Wishing I Could Be Here Every Day, But at Least I Get to Write About It!

But, I didn’t do it all alone — one of our FABULOUS team members who handles some of our social media accounts coordinated and managed this entire takeover. So, first I have to give a quick shout-out to that social media manager and thank them for all their hard work in handling the entire takeover!

Haven’t Seen This Special Lighting in EPCOT In Person Yet, But I CANNOT Wait To!

Before we dive into some of the questions and my answers about my experience prior to coming to DFB (I was a lawyer!), let’s go through a QUICK run-down of what a “typical” day is like — even though no such thing exists. Basically, I wake up pretty early to get ready, organize my place, walk my dog, and get things in order before I start my day. Sometimes I wake up EXTRA early to work on pending items that way I can do them when my brain is super fresh and everything is still quiet.

I Love to Walk Around this Part of Disney’s Hollywood Studios

Then, once my official work day begins, I check-in with the team to let them know I’m here and READY TO GO. Then, I (and all of my fellow writers) get working. On any typical day, you’ll find me checking our hilarious text thread to see what our reporters are sharing from the parks, searching for the latest Disney news, confirming news stories, and writing posts on anything and everything.

EPCOT is Actually My Favorite Park in All of Disney World

But, then in the middle of writing a post about Star Wars merchandise being released online soon, Disney might share some MAJOR BREAKING NEWS like oh, I don’t know details about Disneyland Resort reopening?! Then, I’ve got to pause what I’m doing and hop on the most important stories so that we make sure you get ALL the latest news as quickly as we can get it out to you! (Note that these two things didn’t actually happen on the same day, but they totally could have!)

Then, I basically spend the rest of the day repeating this process over and over again! Writing, researching, more writing, working on the DFB Guide, working on internal documents or records, etc.

Hey There Pluto!

Okay, so now let’s dive into some specific questions about working at DFB!

What experience did you have before you got this job??

Before starting at DFB, I was actually a lawyer — which required a whole LOT of writing. Of course, the writing was very different in terms of style and content (you don’t typically write in-depth pieces about the history of Disney World as a lawyer!), but the writing experience itself has been a big help in my work here.

Disney World Balloons Are So Fun But I Don’t Think I’ve Ever Even Owned One!

My experience researching things in the field of law has also helped me with DFB, just in the sense that I feel comfortable diving deep into topics, even when they get real complex! (Which they DEFINITELY do sometimes! Especially with the current state of the world today. We always want to make sure we’re putting in our due diligence to give you 100% accurate information.)

I had to research a LOT of things for this article — click here to check out 100 things that will BLOW your mind about Disney World!

What’s the best thing about your job?

I love seeing positive comments from readers saying that they really enjoyed, or learned something new, from an article. That means so much to me, especially on articles that require a lot of work or research — it’s nice to hear that the time and effort I put in really means something to someone else! We actually have a Slack channel called “You Do Important Work” where anyone on the team can post positive encouragement messages — emails, direct messages, and notes from our readers and followers telling us how much our work has meant to them. We get fun, happy notes as well as very emotional, heartfelt thank yous there, and it reminds us all of why we go to work every day.

Friends Are the Best

So, if you wonder if your kind comments get back to us and if they impact us in any way, believe me when I say that they do.

Is your job hard?

Yes! But it wouldn’t be as rewarding of a job if there wasn’t an element of challenge behind it! What I absolutely love about DFB is that the team, the managers, everyone really, all push each other each and every day to do our VERY best work. Whether that’s becoming more efficient, challenging yourself to learn new skills, tackling large projects — there’s never a dull moment around here.

The 2021 DFB Guide is an Awesome Resource

I’m the type of person who is SUPER critical of my work (and really hard on myself), so I know I’ve still got a lot to learn. But, I will say that over time I’ve become much more confident in the work I do! I started out just eight months ago as a writer, and since then, I’ve branched out to help with editing, working on our DFB Guide Books, and a few other projects as well. I feel so grateful to have had the chance to grow within this company in such a short amount of time. It’s hard, but it’s SO worth it.

Is the job what you expected or is it different

I think it’s both! You do get to write a lot about Disney in a whole bunch of different ways, which is what I was expecting. But, I don’t think I anticipated just HOW many things there would be to write about each day! There is literally ALWAYS something happening/changing/closing/etc., (and we want to make sure we cover every. last. detail. to make sure you guys are fully equipped to have a stress-free and enjoyable visit).

Cinderella Castle

I also wasn’t expecting just how much work goes on behind the scenes to help keep the ship afloat. (When I said there was never a dull moment, I REALLY meant that.) We’ve got team members covering the clock 24/7. It’s really been interesting to see it all work and be a part of this awesome crew.

Tell us a funny story about DFB!!

Honestly, I know every team member who’s taken over Instagram has said this, but it NEEDS to be said again. 😂Our internal text thread is the BEST. Since we are all pretty much moving at 100% capacity each day — writing, editing, researching, creating content, reporting, you name it — being able to laugh together and remain connected, even from all over the country, is really nice. There’s no one specific funny moment I can pinpoint — it’s more of a constant state of high-energy fun. ❤

Mickey Balloons

And that’s basically what it’s like to be a DFB writer! Put very simply, I thought I knew a lot about Disney before, but BOY WAS I WRONG! I’ve still got a lot to learn, but I’m LOVING the work I do and the team here at DFB.
