We’ve been keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Elsa as it continues towards Florida. Although the storm is expected to mainly focus on western Florida, there will still likely be storms and rainfall in Orlando.

Since hurricane season has begun, we’ve compiled a list of the top tips from our readers for going to Disney World during a hurricane! We have already shared our personal tips but wanted to share a few from other guests as well.

It’s important to note that if you happen to be in Disney World during a hurricane and Disney considers it unsafe for guests and Cast Members, you may be asked to shelter in place at your resort. This does not happen often as most of the time, the Disney World area just experiences a bit of rain. But it has happened and is something you want to keep in mind when planning a Disney trip during hurricane season.

If you find yourself in this situation, please follow all guidelines from Disney to ensure your safety during your trip. If it is safe to be in the parks, Disney will keep them open with some attractions and restaurants still available! Here are the top tips from our readers on how to enjoy the Disney parks in extreme weather!

1. Use Plastic Zip Lock Bags!

One reader said “Put your small electronics, wallet/money, and important paper work in plastic zip-lock bags. They will be waterproof and you can grab them in an emergency.”

This is a good tip even if you’re just visiting during the rainy season. You’ll want a way to keep important things in a waterproof bag of some sort! Bring some bags with you and be prepared to use them in the parks! And if it doesn’t rain on your trip, you may want to put your important goodies in there when you hop on water rides!

2. Use a Poncho

One reader said it best: “Put on a poncho.” They mentioned that “everyone else runs for a dry place. Not my family, get in line and enjoy.”

If you’re ready for the rain, you can keep moving and enjoying the shorter wait times in the parks instead of stopping inside to wait out the rain! According to one reader, “Do not leave park, enjoy whatever rides are open short wait times. Make it an adventure!!!”

3. Bring Extra Shoes and Socks

According to one reader, “I like to keep my rain coat, flip flops, and an extra pair of shorts in my park bag. That way, if we get hit with a large storm, or even a pop up thundershower, I can take off my shoes and socks, throw on my rain coat, and keep on moving!”

Another reader also recommended a change of shoes: “Switch to flip flops as soon as it starts raining. Keep your shoes and socks dry in a plastic bag. It’s not too cold for your feet because of the warm rain.” Make sure you’ve got extra socks or a towel to dry off your feet so that you don’t get blisters!

4. Be Aware of Shelters Around You

One reader advised, “Be prepared. Know where shelters are.” If it does get to be too wet or stormy for you to walk around in the parks, make sure you know where you can go to get out of the weather!

Inside shops, under awnings, in restaurants…keep an eye on what’s around you that would be good for pausing to wait out the storm. Also know that Cast Members are well informed and if you ever have questions or concerns, just ask! They will be able to direct you.

5. Follow the Advice of the Resort

A reader reminded us, “Seriously though, follow the advice of the resort.” And they have a good point! Disney will keep you updated on changing weather and advisories.

Pay attention to announcements and warnings from Disney, and follow their advice to stay safe during the storm. If a storm gets too severe to be safe, you’ll be asked to shelter in place at your resort, where Disney will be prepared with food and some entertainment!

6. Keep an Eye on the Weather

Several readers mentioned keeping an eye on the forecast on the days leading up to your stay. Weather — and storms especially — can be fickle and hard to predict, so it’s possible that the forecast will change in the days before you get to the parks.

One said, “Still go if the forecast is not finite. We went during Dorian a few years ago and it was the best Disney experience we ever had. Disney goes above and beyond to make sure everyone has a great experience. Hurricane paths can change so quickly – Go to Disney still! Especially after you spend months planning for your trip!”

7. Cancel or Reschedule

OK, so most readers recommended still going to Disney World, even if the forecast looks threatening. But we had a few who really recommended rescheduling for better weather!

One reader said, “Don’t go to Florida during hurricane season… works every time!” If you’re not excited about walking in the rain or riding out bad weather, it might be best to reschedule your trip. Remember, you can reschedule for free if Orlando issues a hurricane warning within 7 days of your arrival!
