I Was Today Years Old When I Learned THIS About Disney World

Walt Disney World is a vast and overwhelming place, filled with hundreds (maybe even thousands) of hidden secrets!

There are so many interesting things to notice at Disney World!

We’re constantly noticing new Imagineering details in the parks or learning fun facts about our favorite attractions. Even after years of visiting the parks, there’s still so much to see! And today, we’re sharing with you some of the things that you may not know about Disney World, even if you’ve been dozens of times.

MagicBands Can Be Adjusted for Smaller Wrists

Is your MagicBand too big for your wrist? Do you have to move over several notches before it even fits right? Well, good news — there’s a solution!

Did you know you could peel off the gray part?

The gray part of the MagicBand peels apart from the decorated section to make it fit better for children or those with small wrists. This can be a real game-changer for comfort if you plan on wearing it all day long in the parks! We’re surprised by how many guests don’t realize the gray portion is removable! Bonus tip — if you don’t like the frayed plasticky edges once you pull off the gray part, rub the edges with a nail file. It’ll polish those edges right up!

Walt Disney Never Said “If You Can Dream It, You Can Do It”

This line is often misrepresented as being a quote directly from Walt Disney himself, but that is simply not true! Fans of OG EPCOT (meaning EPCOT Center!) are all probably screaming out the answer to this right now! The quote was written by Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald specifically for the Horizons attraction at EPCOT.

The saying was displayed prominently inside the attraction and the theme song was full of children belting out the now-famous line. Horizons and EPCOT opened well after Walt Disney’s passing, so the quote most certainly didn’t belong to him. Surprisingly, the Science of Imagineering DVD series (which was from the Disney Company) mistakenly attributes the quote to Walt!

Disney is Very Good At Hiding Things in Plain Sight

There are some things at Disney World that you just can’t help but notice (like the plethora of construction walls in EPCOT right now), but other things Disney prefers to hide from the everyday guest. If you start paying close attention the next time you’re in the park, you may notice that many boxes, light posts, and general behind-the-scenes type things are painted in the same green color.

They make some construction scrims in the green color as well.

This green color is colloquially called Go-Away Green and it has been specially developed by Disney to be a color that is overlooked by guests. If something is painted in Go-Away Green, you’re probably less likely to notice it! And that’s not the only color they developed — they also have one called Bye Bye Blue that’s perfect for blending unsightly buildings in with the sky. Notice (or DON’T notice) the MASSIVE show building at the front of EPCOT for the new Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster? If it doesn’t stand out like a sore thumb to you, you can thank Bye Bye Blue for the camouflage. It works surprisingly well!

There Are Some Hyper-Realistic Details in Liberty Square

Let us warn you — after reading this, you’ll never look at Magic Kingdom’s Liberty Square the same again! There are some truly hyper-realistic details in that particular land that we didn’t truly pay attention to for several years. The Imagineers were incredibly accurate to colonial times!

This land is filled with interesting details!

First of all, you may spot some dolls in different windows of the houses. These are placed to represent how town residents would do the same to let the colonial-age fire department know that a child is inside that room. This helped firefighters know who all was in a home in the event of a fire.

How curious!

Also on the fire-front, some buildings have a special crest at the front of the buildings. This represents that the family inside donated money to the firefighters and was basically a not-so-subtle way of letting the fire department know if there’s a fire which houses to save first!

This Family Deserves Saving?

And if you’re paying attention to the windows, you’ll probably also notice that the shutters are crooked. During that time, many people hung their shutters with leather because metal was being gathered to help make bullets and weapons for the war effort — this meant that many had to donate their shutter hinges.

As you’re walking through the land, make sure to look down. The brown section of pavement flowing through?

Liberty Square

That’s symbolic of a river of human waste! Before indoor plumbing, residents simply dumped their waste buckets into the street and it flowed like a river down the road. And speaking of plumbing — there were no public restrooms in colonial times, so you won’t find any in Liberty Square either! So this one is TECHNICALLY true but definitely has a big ol’ asterisk. All the ones nearby are located just inside Fantasyland or Adventureland. Columbia Harbour House and Liberty Tree Tavern both DO have restrooms…they’re just located at the back of their respective buildings so, technically, the land they sit on…is in a different land. Tricky, huh?

Some of the Waterfalls in Pandora Are Fake

It’s widely acknowledged that Pandora — The World of Avatar is one of the most impressive lands Disney has ever built. The scenery is stunning and the floating mountains are an engineering marvel. But, all may not be as it seems!

Not every waterfall is real in Pandora!

Did you know that some of the waterfalls you see cascading down the landscape are actually fake? If you look towards the very top, the smallest waterfalls are actually made of netting attached to rotating wheels. The wheels rotate slower than you’d think, tricking your eye into thinking it’s actual water! They look very similar to the other waterfalls, so they’re pretty convincing from far away!

There Are Tunnels Underneath EPCOT As Well!

The tunnels, AKA Utilidors, underneath Disney’s Magic Kingdom, are one of the park’s worst-kept secrets. But, you may not know that EPCOT has its own mini tunnel system as well!

There are tunnels under EPCOT, too!

In the Future World section of the park, there’s a smaller version of the underground tunnels located primarily underneath Spaceship Earth and where Innoventions used to stand. They’re very useful in getting Cast Members from one place to another!

Here Are Some Things You Probably Didn’t Know You Could Do in Disney World!

Disney World Has a Singing Runway

Back in the early 1970s, there was a small landing area for planes near Magic Kingdom park. You could actually fly directly to Disney World on a limited number of flights! The runway is no longer in use, but it was used for a while to train bus drivers for the resort. And it holds a fun secret!

When a vehicle drives more than 45 mph down the runway, the grooves on the pavement cause sound effects — sound effects that play the classic Disney song, “When You Wish Upon A Star!” Officially named the Lake Buena Vista Stolport, it earned it the nickname of the “Singing Runway.” This was only in operation for a very short period of time but you might be surprised JUST how close you are to in when entering Magic Kingdom. It’s JUST past the parking entrance to your right!

It’s Not Woody’s “Real” Voice on Toy Story Mania

And last but not least, let’s talk about Toy Story Land! When riding Toy Story Mania, you’re escorted through the ride by Woody and pals as you play a series of carnival-style games to earn points. But the voice you’re hearing for Woody isn’t actually Tom Hanks…it’s his brother Jim!

Toy Story Mania is a lot of fun for the whole family!

Our team was split on this one — some knew, some had their minds BLOWN with this one! It led us down a long Hanks-spiral our team is still recovering from. Safe to say, we’re all basically Tom Hanks experts now. 😂 Jim has been known to do voice work for Tom in the past, and he actually voices Woody frequently for Disney attractions, video games, and toys. But that’s not even the first time Jim has stepped in for Tom — the younger brother also did a lot of the running shots in Forrest Gump!

Here’s How to Win at Toy Story Mania!
