If you’re heading to Disney World soon for the 50th Anniversary Celebration, make sure you have room for food — somewhere in the neighborhood of 150+ new bites and sips. We aren’t kidding, there are over one hundred new food and drink items for fans to enjoy at the parks and resorts!
Today, we made our way to P&J’s Southern Takeout at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campgrounds to try a 50th Anniversary treat that takes a sweet twist on a classic dinner!
P&J’s Southern Takeout is serving up not one, not two, but THREE cupcakes in its “Chicken Dinner” Trio! Each of these cupcakes is designed after different components of a traditional Chicken Dinner.
First up is the Fried Chicken Cupcake! This is described by Disney as being made of an Apple Fritter, as well as Apple Pie Moonshine Filling and Vanilla Buttercream.
But, we didn’t get any apple taste from the portion on the top, and we also didn’t get any kind of Apple Pie Moonshine Filling. It’s not clear if that was just our experience or if the cupcake has been updated, so that’s something to keep in mind.
The top portion — the “chicken” had a lovely texture, like a fluffy cinnamon donut hole. It also had a surprise pretzel stick in the center! The pretzel was a bit stale and mushy though, from having been inside this top “fritter” portion. The “chicken leg” was essentially like a cinnamon donut hole and was covered in a sweet buttercream frosting and graham cracker crumbles.
While it might not have had that apple flavor as described, it was very tasty!
Again, the inside of the cupcake portion itself didn’t have any filling. Instead, it was just a vanilla cupcake with that vanilla buttercream and graham cracker crumbles. Overall, the design of this cupcake was certainly the most fun with that “chicken” on top and the flavor was pretty good. It was sweet, but not overly so.
Next is the Peas and Carrots Cupcake! Disney describes this as featuring Strawberry Moonshine Custard with White Chocolate Frosting and M&M’S Mini “Peas.”
Just as with the previous cupcake, the version we got today was slightly different than how it is described. The cupcake we grabbed was a basic vanilla cupcake though we did get a bit of a hint of lemon. The carrots were orange Starburst pieces, and the peas were green M&M’S. The icing was, at least from what we could tell, a traditional icing that was very sweet.
Unfortunately, we didn’t get any of that Strawberry Moonshine Custard or White Chocolate Frosting. But still, the cupcake itself was really cute in terms of its design, and it was light, fluffy, and tasty.
Last but certainly not least is the Mock Mashed Potato Cupcake. This was described by Disney as a Snickers Mousse Cupcake with Caramel Buttercream and Starburst “Butter.”
When we grabbed it today, what we got was essentially a peanut butter chocolate chip vanilla cupcake with actual peanut pieces inside. The frosting was a vanilla buttercream (not a caramel buttercream as described), but the caramel came through in the form of a caramel syrup that was placed on top as the “gravy.”
The design on this cake was great too! That yellow Starburst definitely looks like a slice of butter, and the vanilla buttercream coupled with the caramel sauce makes it really look like mashed potatoes and gravy.
The cake itself was moist and yummy. The buttercream was slightly sweet, without making us feel like we were going to get a million cavities.
All three cupcakes were really good and not overly sweet (a welcome balance compared to some of the SUPER sweet treats we’ve had recently). Their design is undoubtedly the star of the show here though. These are the cupcakes you’ve got to get a photo of because they are just SO fun!
Because these cupcakes were smaller, it makes the entire dessert feel a bit lighter. Our reporter who tried these shared that they’re not normally a big cupcake person, but even they loved this trio. So, if you’re a huge cupcake fan or you just want to grab a “Chicken Dinner” to take adorable photos with, this could be a good choice. You can grab this trio of cupcakes for $9.99.
