With Disney World decorations, merch, and snacks putting us in the mood for the spooky season, we think it’s a good time to bring some of that Disney Halloween magic into your OWN kitchen!
If the pumpkins along Main Street, U.S.A. and the themed treats aren’t putting you in the spirit enough already, how about taking some of the Disney inspiration into your own hands?
With Halloween around the corner, here are some of the best Disney-inspired Halloween recipes you can make right now!
Monsters, Inc. Pop Tarts
For those who can’t make it to Disney World for some monstrous fun at BOO Bash, we’ve got a tasty alternative for you to recreate at home: Monsters, Inc. Pop Tarts!
Here’s how you make them!
Ingredients:
Pop Tarts
- 2 store-bought pie crust dough sheets
- Flour (for dusting surface area)
- Jars of jam (strawberry and blueberry)
- Butter, melted
Icing
- 1 bag powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup meringue powder (find this at many grocery stores in the baking aisle or a hobby store like Michael’s)
- 2 tablespoons vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup warm water
- Lime green, leaf green, sky blue, and royal blue food coloring
Materials
- Rolling pin
- Toothpicks
- Pastry brush
- 5 piping bags
- Piping bag tips (#2)
- Kitchen scissors
Directions:
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
- Start by lightly dusting your work area with a coating of flour to keep the dough from sticking. Unroll your pie crust dough and flatten with a rolling pin onto the flour-coated surface. Begin cutting 3 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. Depending on the size and shape of your pie crust dough, you will only be able to get 2-3 rectangles from each crust.
- Combine your scraps and continue to roll out the dough until it is used up. (From the 2 packs of pie crust dough, they were able to get 18 rectangles for 9 pop tarts)
- Next, take half of your rectangular dough cutouts and place 2 tablespoons of jam in the center of each.
- Once complete, take the other half of your pie crust cutouts and place them on top of the jam filling. Seal it up by scoring the ends with a fork and vent piercing the top layer with a toothpick. Brush the tops of each pop tart with melted butter and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- Allow to cool for 2 hours. During this time, you can start making the icing. Combine powdered sugar, meringue powder, vanilla extract, and water. Split into 5 bowls for each of the colors.
- Once the pop tarts have completely cooled, place the lime green icing (for Mike Wazowski) and sky blue icing (for Sulley) in piping bags with 1/4″ of the tips snipped off. Coat the top of the pop tarts with icing (avoiding scored edges).
- Allow 30 minutes- 1 hour for the base layer of icing to fully harden before proceeding with the piping details. Then, spoon the remaining 3 colors (leaf green, royal blue, and white) into 3 separate piping bags fitted with a tip.
- Starting with the Mike Wazowski pop tarts, pipe a quarter-sized circle for his eye using the white icing. Next, grab the leaf green icing and create 2 triangular shapes above the eye for his horns and a half-circle shape for his mouth. Place a dime-sized circle in the center of the white circle to form his pupil. Lastly, switch back to the white icing and add a few triangular teeth and a highlight to the inner pupil.
- For Sulley, grab your sky blue pop tarts and the piping bag with white icing. Form 2 dime-sized circles for his eyes and 2 small triangles below his right eye for the teeth. Next, with the royal blue icing make 2 crescent shapes above the eyes for his horns, a simple curved line for his smile, and a diamond shape for his nose. Add 2 small royal blue circles to the center of the eyes for his pupils.
- Next, take the leftover sky blue icing and pipe stripes onto Sulley’s horns. Finish by using your remaining white icing to form 2 highlights on the pupils.
Let the icing sit for about 1 hour before enjoying!
Mike Wazowski Eye
Another Monsters, Inc.-inspired treat is definitely the oddest Halloween recipe we’ve seen from Disney — and we’re here for it! It’s a Mike Wazowski Eye, which apparently has a coconut flavor theme happening… .
For this recipe, you’ll need:
- 6 ice ball molds or small round bowls
- 2 (13.5 oz.) cans unsweetened coconut milk
- 1 cup of coconut water
- ⅔ cup of sugar
- 3 teaspoons agar powder
- Red, blue, green food coloring
Don’t freak out, we know it looks like a REAL monster eye but it’s actually completely edible!
Hmm…gooey and coconut-y? We’d give it a try!
Deviled Dragon Eggs
Fear not: no dragons were harmed in the making of Disney’s Deviled Dragon Eggs! In fact, this vibrant recipe doesn’t call for any dragon ingredients at all — just purple cabbage! Even better, if you have green food coloring, you could dye the egg yolk filling and make it EXTRA festive!
Ingredients
- 8 cups shredded red cabbage
- 12 large eggs2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- 1 teaspoon chopped fresh dill, plus more for garnish
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Step One: Place 4 cups of the shredded cabbage in a medium saucepan. Cover the cabbage so it’s totally submerged in water with at least 1 inch of water above it. Boil over medium-high heat until tender and the water is deep purple, 20 to 30 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, remove the cooked shredded cabbage and discard, leaving the water in the pan.
Step Two: While the cabbage is cooking, prepare the eggs. Place the eggs in a separate medium saucepan and cover with water by at least 1 inch. Over medium-high heat, bring the water to a full boil. As soon as the water is boiling, remove the pan from the heat and cover. Let the eggs sit in the hot water for 15 minutes, then remove to an ice bath to chill for 1 minute.
Step Three: Lightly crack the egg shells by rolling them on a kitchen towel on the counter. You want there to be fine cracks, but for the shell to still adhere. The finer the cracks, the better the result will be, so be careful.
Step Four: Place the eggs in a storage container with a lid. Pour the cabbage water over the eggs, cover, and chill for at least 12 hours or overnight.
Step Five: Remove the eggs from the water, then peel the shells. The result should be beautiful purple marbling of the egg whites. Cut each egg in half lengthwise. Scoop out the yolk into a medium mixing bowl, and place the whites on a platter.
Step Six: In the bowl with the yolks, add the olive oil, mayonnaise, mustard, dill, salt, and pepper. Stir to combine, then divide evenly between the cups of the egg whites.
Step Seven: Top eggs with a sprinkle of dill and serve eggs over nests made with the remaining raw cabbage. Chill before serving.
Pumpkin Soup
As evidenced by the decor along Main Street, U.S.A., no ingredient screams “Happy Halloween” quite like pumpkins!
So if you’ve got any pumpkins left over from Jack-O-Lantern carving, Disney has shared its recipe for Pumpkin Soup, which should be perfect as the weather starts to (hopefully) cool off.
Mickey Pumpkin Truffles
Speaking of pumpkin, check out these ADORABLE Mickey Pumpkin Truffles inspired by those Main Street, U.S.A. Mickey pumpkins!
For this recipe, you’ll need:
- 36 chocolate sandwich cookies
- 8 oz cream cheese, softened
- 1 package orange candy melts
- Yellow, orange, and green fondant
Strangely, these treats don’t actually have any pumpkin flavor in them, but they definitely LOOK the part! And an Instagram moment is what it’s all about anyway, right?
They’re ALMOST too cute to eat!
Jack Skellington Cookies
Is the Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Regardless, any movie that inspires cookies iced with cartoon skulls is perfect fodder for Halloween baking!
For the Jack Skellington Cookies, Disney has shared its recipe for classic sugar cookies with a spooky twist!
The Evil Queen’s Mini Poison Apple Pies
Time for dessert! And really, where better to serve The Evil Queen’s Mini Poison Apple Pies than in teeny tiny little cauldrons?
For this recipe, you’ll need:
- 1 can whole berry cranberries
- 1 apple, peeled and diced
- 1/4 cup water
- 3 tablespoons sugar
- 2 store-bought pie crusts
- Large, round cookie cutter (3-4 inches)
- Mini pie or muffin tins
- Toothpick
- 1 tablespoon coconut, grapeseed, or olive oil
And not to worry, “poison” isn’t actually one of the ingredients!
Throwing your own Disney-style Halloween party will be a piece of cake with these recipes! Or should we say, a piece of Poison Apple Pie?!
