PHOTOS: Tour the ‘Storybook Mansion’ That Walt Disney Lived In!

Here at DFB, we know that our readers are usually big fans of Disney-themed or historically significant houses.

In the past, we’ve shared looks at storybook cottages, castles fit for a queen, and even a peek inside Disney CEO Bob Chapek’s own mansion. But today, we have some photos of an extra special house to share — a house that Walt Disney himself lived in!

Back in 1932, Walt Disney’s wife Lillian was expecting their first child, and he decided that his family needed a bigger home to live in. At that time, he commissioned the construction of a house on Woking Way in Los Angeles, and that same house stands to this day. And recently, the Orange County Register shared some photos and history of the property.

The Woking Way house is more commonly called “Walt Disney’s Storybook Mansion.” It was built during the Great Depression in about 2 months, costing $50,000 at the time. Currently, the house is owned by Russian film director Timur Bekmambetov.

These days, the Storybook Mansion is partly used by its owner, but also open sometimes for film shoots, special events, and occasional tours.

The house was designed by architect Frank Crowhurst, who also contributed to the Walt Disney Co. headquarters. It’s 6400 square feet with 5 bedrooms, a projection room, a library, a pool pavilion with dressing rooms, and a pool house. It’s made in the French-Norman style of architecture.

Outside, there stands a Snow White-themed playhouse that Walt Disney had built for his two daughters. It was a Christmas gift one year and it’s made to look just like a little cottage!

This house is located near the iconic Griffith Park, where Walt first had the idea for Disneyland while watching his daughters ride the carousel. It’s also the home where he lived when several hit Disney films were released, including Pinocchio, Fantasia, Dumbo, Bambi, and Cinderella.

The details you’ll find around the property are just like something out of a Disney movie. Doesn’t this look like it belongs in a princess film?!

The house is a big piece of Disney history, and if you’d like to check it out, make sure to visit the Facebook page to see when the next available tour is scheduled. Stay tuned to DFB for more Disney news and history!
