When Disney World does things right, they REALLY do things right.

But man, when Disney misses…sometimes they miss by a mile. We found a new 50th Anniversary souvenir in the Magic Kingdom today that seems a little off to us, for a couple of reasons. The new item is…well…you’ve just got to see it for yourself.

We were checking out the sweet treats at Disney’s newly refurbished Main Street Confectionery today when we spotted the newest arrival. Y’all ready for this?

The new 50th items are Mickey and Minnie-shaped M&M containers with sparkling M&M’s inside.

Each M&M has a little Cinderella Castle with the “50” logo on it. Guys. They’re weird looking. Fleshy colored M&M’s?! They’re not consistently colored — they’re more mottled by their iridescent coating. Tell us these don’t look like they’re REALLY old candies that were rattling under the seat in your car in the summer heat for months before you found them.

The M&M’s are milk chocolate flavored, and they’re supposed to be gold or champagne colored…but that color just doesn’t seem to suit the candy very well. Champagne color = fleshy M&M’s. Obviously.

Especially considering how the packaging is shaped…well, we’re just going to say it. These candies look a little too much like brains.

It’s such an unfortunate decision to go with that color. It seems like every other 50th Anniversary snack in Disney World was EARidescent with shades of blue, pink, and purple. That would have been perfect for M&M’s! But this time it had to be brains — er — champagne we mean.

So how much do you think these strange-looking M&M containers COST? Ready to get knocked over when you learn the price?? The cost of one container was $39.99.

No, you didn’t read that wrong. Yes, we’re sure. We even double-checked (and triple-checked!) with a Cast Member to be certain that we weren’t confused for some reason. One of those packages is $40. From the looks of it, that means these candies cost like a buck an M&M, HA!

You get 11.8oz of M&Ms in those $40 containers. For context, you can get a 10.7oz bag (also available at the Main Street Confectionery) for $6.49. So for one ounce less, and without the 50th packaging, you can save $33.50.

But what if you’re wanting a more special M&M experience? Well, you could customize your own bag of M&Ms using the colorful wall at the Confectionery.

A 1-pound bag (16oz) of these M&Ms is $12.99. So that means that 11.8oz of these M&Ms would cost around $9.58.

Plus then you could get much prettier colors with all the choices available here!

So in general, we just don’t really get this new item. It is an interesting souvenir, and if you’re really into collecting unique 50th items, it might be worth the cost. Plus it’s just…odd. So maybe buy it if you like those weirder souvenirs that years later someone spots on a shelf and are like, “WHAT is that weird thing?”

Oh, this ol’ thing? Just our gross-looking glittery skin-colored candy.
