There are some incredible Disney-based video games out there, like Kingdom Hearts, or does anyone else remember the incredibly difficult 1994 The Lion King game? If you’re one of the lucky ones to remember Adventures in the Magic Kingdom though, our hats are off to you.

In 1990, Adventures in Magic Kingdom was released by Capcom for Nintendo. (We mean that old gray box with controllers ON CORDS with the cartridges we all thought blowing into would make work better. Just ask your mom or dad. They know. ). While it was not a masterpiece, it was fun for many 90s kids. One game just so happened to have players answer Disney trivia. When we recently took a look at the trivia NOW, we were surprised by how difficult some of the questions were!! So let’s test how much of a Disney trivia question expert you are!

We’ll be honest — most of our team had never heard of this game. But of those that had, it was a BIG deal for their little Disney World-loving brains at the time. And those of us that played it remember how weird and unique the game was — including the odd trivia portion of the game!

But First, What WAS This Game?!

So what WAS this game? Adventures in Magic Kingdom told the incredibly loose story of Goofy leaving Cinderella Castle gate’s golden key inside the park. Players were tasked with retrieving six silver keys in order to open the castle gate (Obviously. Don’t your keys have 6 backup keys?) in order to start the Disney parade on time.

To do this, players had to complete five different games, each of which were based INCREDIBLY loosely on Disney theme park rides. What do we mean? Well, THIS was the Pirates of the Caribbean game:

Yeah, you’re a little cowboy kid. Or like a kid from the Australian outback. Not quite sure, but that’s you. You’re this kid on Haunted Mansion as well. (There’s also a legit creepy ghost that chases after you and apparently you kill ghosts here with candles? Sure. Why not!) FYI, this and the Pirates section were borderline impossible for us growing up!

There’s a fun Space Mountain-themed section where you navigate around meteors in space…

…and a bizarre Autopia section (that would be the DISNEYLAND name for the Magic Kingdom’s equivalent Tomorrowland Speedway. There’s a lot of head-scratcher moments like that where it seems like they jumbled up the parks in the game. Just go with it!). At one point you do, in fact, leap over what appears to be a lake of red mud or blood. Not sure. Not gonna probe any deeper on that one.

And there’s a fun Big Thunder Mountain Railroad ride where you have to end up on the right track at the end.

Players also had to run around the map finding kids with a dog (that looks just like Pluto) to answer trivia questions in order to obtain the key around the dog’s neck. And you know what — some of the questions were HARD. 

The board was fun to explore. There’s even an “it’s a small world” you could walk up to but not ride. Maybe a scrapped 6th ride? Either way, it’s there to confuse a generation of kids thinking it was ridable and they just couldn’t figure out how to get on!

This game was weird, fun, oddly more like DisneyLAND than World, and loaded with a catchy 8-bit soundtrack we can still hum to this day. What can we say, it was a bop. If anyone knows what getting all the keys looks like, let us know cause we’d be lying if we said we actually fully successfully finished the game! Very young us collectively needs to know what the parade looks like!! But back to those trivia questions! Let’s see how many YOU know!

What year did the Mickey Mouse comic begin?

Mickey Mouse was a newspaper comic strip created by a number of illustrators and authors, including Walt Disney himself. This was the first published Disney comic, and the first Mickey Mouse comic strip debuted on January 13, 1930!

Where does the story of Dumbo take place? 

While most people probably know Dumbo is set at a circus, did you know WHERE the circus is located? Dumbo takes place in 1941 at a circus in Florida. (There’s a shot of the state as the storks fly down to drop off the babies!) We wonder if this fictional circus was anywhere near Disney World!

What is Donald Duck’s middle name? 

The first time we see Donald’s middle name is in the 1942 short film Donald Gets Drafted, in which Donald is drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. His middle name is visible on his manifest to report to duty, and it’s also a name for a garment that typically consists of a sailor suit and hat (AKA Donald’s favorite outfit!). Donald Duck’s middle name is Fauntleroy!

When is Mickey Mouse’s birthday? 

This one might be an easy one for some of you. Mickey’s birthday is based on the date of the release of the short film Steamboat Willie, which was directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. Mickey Mouse’s birthday is November 18, 1928. That means Mickey is almost 93 years old!

What is the film in which Goofy first appears? 

In his first appearance on film, Goofy played a member of the audience with a unique laugh (ah-hyuck!). Goofy’s first film was Mickey’s Revue, a 1932 animated short. We have a bit more trivia about Goofy coming up!

What is the name of Hook’s ship in Peter Pan? 

The Nintendo game used this trivia question as a trick question!! The correct answer in the game is “it doesn’t have a name” because Disney’s animated Peter Pan film from 1953 does not reference it. But the creator of Peter Pan, children’s author and playwright J.M. Barrie, did name the ship in the 1904 play, even though it is not technically referred to by name in Disney’s animated film. It is later called by name in the ABC television series, Once Upon a Time. Captain Hook’s ship is called The Jolly Roger.

What character is known as Musse Pigg in Sweden?

Need a hint? Pigg means “lively” or “cheery” in Swedish, so the translation is essentially “Sprightly Mouse.” It’s Mickey Mouse! He is also called Mickey Mus, as “mus” means mouse in Swedish. The spelling of mus as “musse” is an attempt to make the Swedish word for mouse look like an actual name. Swedish editor Anna-Stina Hägg was responsible for translating “Mickey Mouse” into Swedish.

What Disney Character is in the most films?

This character has been in 197 films, and it’s not Mickey Mouse, who has been in 167 films. This piece of trivia was correct in 1990 and is still correct today in 2021! The answer is…Donald Duck! With the exception of the superhero genre, Donald is also the most published comic book character in the world.

Which Winnie the Pooh Character was once named Edward? 

This character first appeared in the creator of Winnie the Pooh, A. A. Milne’s poem, “Teddy Bear,” published in February 13, 1924. It’s Winnie the Pooh himself! A. A. Milne eventually named the character after his son Christopher Robin’s teddy bear that he called Winnie, though he was not officially called Winnie the Pooh until December 24, 1925, in a Christmas story published by the London newspaper Evening News.

When Goofy first appeared he had another name…? 

Goofy originally debuted in newspaper comic strips under a different name, as well as in the his first animated short, which we mentioned above. He did not appear under the name of Goofy until the 1938 film, Goofy & Wilbur. Goofy’s original name was Dippy Dawg! Gawrsh!

What was the first Academy Award winning cartoon?

In the new category of “Short Subjects, Cartoons,” the first animated film to earn an Oscar was the Disney short film Flowers and Trees, at the fifth Academy Awards in 1932. This film was one of the Silly Symphonies series of 75 Disney short animated musical films. It was also the first Disney animated film to be in color!

Some of the questions were pretty simple (What time does Cinderella’s spell wear off? Midnight, obv.) but others were a bit more tricky. Do YOU know what the first cartoon appearance of Mickey was? Hint: it’s NOT Steamboat Willie (it was Plane Crazy which came out earlier the same year as Steamboat Willie!).  So some of these questions must have been really hard for 80s kids, especially without the Internet!
