Today, the official Disneyland Magic Key Instagram account made a post honoring Walt Disney’s 120th birthday. While the sentiment is much appreciated by Disney fans, some may notice the caption has a major error.
The quote “If you can dream it, you can do it” has oft been misattributed to Walt Disney, but it seems particularly egregious when done by an official Disney account.
D23 has even written about the misquote before in a Q&A with Dave Smith, author of “Disney Trivia from the Vault.” Smith’s book notes, “Despite its frequent publication, that is not a Walt Disney quote. We checked with Imagineer Tom Fitzgerald for the definitive answer: ‘I am very familiar with that line because I wrote it! It was written specifically for the Horizons attraction at Epcot and used in numerous ways, from dialogue in the ride to graphics.”
