We stopped by EPCOT to see what was new since the parks temporarily closed in mid-March, and lo and behold, the 2020 EPCOT Food and Wine Festival has begun!
So, now that the festival is in full swing, we had to stop by Islands of the Caribbean! This booth is returning from last year so we were anxious to see what was in store for this year!
Returning this year was the Ropa Vieja Empanada with Tomato Aïoli as well as the Jerk-spiced Chicken with Roasted Sweet Plantain Salad and Mango Chutney Yogurt.
We started with the Ropa Vieja Empanada for $5.50. This dish is a little bit of let down for us. Don’t get us wrong! It was pretty good, just a little heavy on the grease. There are really good meat dishes around Food & Wine so this snack might be skippable.
New this year is the Flancocho: Passion Fruit Cake with Coconut Flan for $4.25. The Flancocho had a nice tanginess from the passion fruit balanced with the sweetened coconut.
Back again is the Jerk-Spiced chicken for $5.50. This is a hearty meal that will fill you up pretty nicely. The chicken is charred and spiced with a nice rub and the plantains aren’t too sweet.
Islands of the Caribbean has three beverage selections: the Red Stripe Lager, the Opici Family White Sangria, and the Frozen Mojito.
We washed it all down with a Frozen Mojito for $10.50. If you like mojitos you’ll probably like this drink! The blended ice makes it cool and refreshing with the zing from the lime and a bit of cool from the mint.
Last year, this booth was cooking their jerk chicken on open grills (which meant AWESOME free chicken smells as you walked by!) but this year we didn’t see that happening. It WAS also about to storm when we made our way by, so we’ll check back to be sure. Take a trip down to the Islands of the Caribbean for a unique spin on the EPCOT Food and Wine Festival!
