Over the years, it’s been speculated that The Walt Disney Company and Apple could merge. Now, with just over a week until his exit from Disney, Bob Iger has lent credence to that rumor.
According to AppleInsider, in an interview with CNBC, Iger stated his belief that if Steve Jobs were still alive, the two companies would have merged by now, or at least discussed the possibility, saying, “I’m pretty convinced we would have had that discussion. I think we would have gotten there,” noting that Disney’s vast library of content would’ve worked perfectly with how Apple presents content to its users.
Iger praised Jobs, noting that the Apple founder was fascinated with “everything that Disney did” and enjoyed combining “great technology” and “great creativity,” adding: “the intersection — one side liberal arts, one side technology. That’s what made his heart sing.”
Jobs became closely involved with Disney following their acquisition of Pixar in 2006, making him Disney’s biggest shareholder until his death in 2011.
Though it’s been speculated that he will eventually return, Iger will formally leave Disney on December 31st as he looks forward to having “a blank canvas” to work with.
