When you’re planning your trip to Disney World, you may hear a lot of things that aren’t true!
You’ll get bad advice or hear incorrect statements about the parks from friends, family, and even other guests during your trip. But we’re here to set the record straight, debunk some myths, and make sure you’re prepared with the TRUTH for your trip!
The Parks Have a Giant Weather Dome
Let’s start with one of the weirdest lies that people actually believe about Disney World — that there’s a giant weather dome that covers the parks when it rains. How would that even work? That’s not real life, guys. That’s what they do in Wakanda. Unfortunately, this isn’t true and the Disney parks are just as subject to bad weather as the rest of the world.
Especially in the summertime, you’ll see quite a few thunderstorms in Florida. No matter when you visit, you’ll need to be prepared for inclement weather. We always suggest packing a rain jacket or a poncho in your park bag so that you’re ready for whatever happens; those storms can pop up out of nowhere! And in a similar vane, Disney World is also most definitely NOT in an air-conditioned dome. Our sweat stains mid-day in the summer can attest to that! It does get very warm and humid in Orlando, so pack accordingly and hydrate often!

Cast Members Can’t Tell You “No”
Disney World employees, known officially as Cast Members, are trained to be polite and helpful and to avoid being rude to guests. However, this doesn’t mean that they have to say “yes” to everything. If you walk up to a Cast Member and ask them for $1,000,000…they gonna say no. Sorry, LOL.
Cast Members are definitely allowed to tell guests “no” if the thing they’re asking goes against the rules…especially when it comes to safety. In general, they’ll try to be polite about the way that they say it though. Either way, do your best to follow the rules and be considerate of the employees in the parks and resorts.
The Rules You NEED to Follow If You Don’t Want to Get Kicked Out of Disney World
Walt Disney’s Head/Body is Frozen Below the Castle
This Disney World lie may be the most “out there” of all of them. Somewhere along the line, someone started a rumor that Walt Disney’s head and/or body are cryogenically frozen and stored below Magic Kingdom in the utilidor tunnels.
As interesting as a Walt popsicle chilling (HA!) under the Castle sounds…this lie is most certainly not true. After his passing, Walt Disney was cremated and his remains are kept in a cemetery in California currently. Walt’s family even confirmed that he died and was put to rest. The tunnels underneath Magic Kingdom don’t house anything quite that unusual or creepy, mostly just areas for Cast Members. Sorry, guys.
Absolute LIES About Magic Kingdom
One of the Haunted Mansion Busts is Walt Disney
And speaking of Walt, many guests believe that one of the singing busts in the graveyard scene of the Haunted Mansion is made to look like him. It does resemble him quite a bit, but it was actually modeled after someone entirely different — Thurl Ravenscroft.
Ravenscroft was a legendary singer and a member of the Mellomen, the singing group that recorded the song “Grim Grinning Ghosts.” The busts you see in the ride were made to look like the members of the group, and the one that most people mistake for Walt is actually Thurl. (Fun fact — he’s also the voice of Tony the Tiger and the one singing the original “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch!!”
So What’s the REAL Backstory of Disney World’s Haunted Mansion Residents?
Cinderella Castle Can Be Dismantled for a Hurricane
Another weather-related rumor about Disney World is that Cinderella Castle is made in multiple pieces and can be dismantled in the case of a hurricane or extreme weather. While that might would be useful if the castle were fragile, you may be surprised by how sturdy the structure really is.
When Magic Kingdom was being constructed, Disney was aware of Florida’s sometimes erratic weather conditions and planned accordingly. Cinderella Castle is made so durably that it can withstand a full-fledged hurricane, and it’s secured firmly to the ground. However, there are procedures for other things in the parks that may not be quite as durable — things like tables or banners will get tied up or stowed away before a storm as Disney “battens down the hatches” ahead of time.

There’s No Alcohol in Magic Kingdom
This one was — for a while — basically true. When Magic Kingdom first opened, it, like Disneyland, was a completely “dry” park. You couldn’t find alcohol anywhere within its gates. However, when Fantasyland was remodeled and Be Our Guest restaurant opened, that changed!
Be Our Guest started serving a variety of adult beverages for guests, and thus, alcohol was introduced to the park. Nowadays, you’ll find it in all of the park’s sit-down restaurants — limited to just beer and wine (or wine-based cocktails, like Sangria). You can ONLY consume alcohol in this park at a sit-down restaurant though — it can’t be purchased at quick-service spots or snack stands like in other parks.

Toy Story Characters Will Fall if You Shout a Certain Phrase
A while back, a photo began circulating the internet that featured Toy Story characters in Disney World laying down on the ground. The caption noted that if guests yelled the phrase “Andy’s coming!” (or “Bonnie’s coming!”) that the characters would fall down. It went viral, but it was actually never a true occurrence in the parks.
The photo was allegedly staged by a then-Cast Member and taken out of context as it started to spread. It led to many guests trying the trick in the parks, but it would be dangerous (and painful. And dirty.) for the characters to continue falling down throughout the day. So don’t worry about trying this one on your next visit to Toy Story Land — you won’t get the reaction that you hope for.

EPCOT Isn’t a Park for Kids
There’s a misconception out there that EPCOT is only a park for adults, and that kids won’t enjoy a visit. But this simply isn’t true, there’s plenty for kids to check out and explore!
The Seas Pavilion, Journey Into Imagination, and the interactive play areas at the end of the rides are all geared toward the little ones in your party. Frozen Ever After being added to the Norway pavilion has been very popular for young families, and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure just opened up for the 50th Anniversary. Besides that, they can enjoy the Kidcot stops around the World Showcase or try the scavenger hunts during the festivals. There’s so much to see for everyone in the family!

There Are No Ways to Save Money in Disney World
It’s no secret that Disney World is pretty pricey, but there are certainly ways to save money during your vacation. First of all, you can bring your own snacks and drinks to the park (with some limitations) to save money on food.
On top of that, we encourage you to check out the Special Offers page on the Disney World website to look for savings on resorts and packages, as well as tickets. You can also join affinity groups to save at restaurants or score discounts as an Annual Passholder, DVC member, or Florida resident.
