As we near the end of a busy holiday travel season, states across the country are reporting new record high cases of COVID-19, led by the Delta and Omicron variants.

WFLA has reported that the state of Florida has broken its single-day record for daily reported cases of COVID-19. On December 28th, the state reported a total of 46,923 new cases. That beats the record set just last week on December 24th with 32,874 reported cases — that beat the previous day’s record on December 23rd, when 31,744 cases were reported. The numbers reported on December 23rd were the highest numbers reported in the state since August 16th, 2021.

The rise in COVID-19 cases is not just happening in Florida. New York City Council member Mark D. Levine reported on Twitter that the state of New York had reported a record 67,090 cases today, with 39,591 of those cases being reported in New York City alone.

Levine then went on to suggest that certain measures be taken to slow the spread of COVID-19, including advising the “public against private in-person NYE’s parties.” Levine is just one of many leaders suggesting that New Year’s Eve plans be canceled altogether in the wake of this recent surge.
