REVIEW: Disappointing Lunch Buffet Offers Few Good Options on Day 2 of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser

For those who return hungry from Batuu or remain on the Halcyon, a lunch buffet is served in the Crown of Corellia Dining Room on day 2 of the Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser. Lunch is served from 11:00 a.m. through 4:00 p.m. Most of the offerings are different from the welcome lunch buffet on the first day.

Lunch Buffet Offerings

Soups and Salads

Chili-spiced Cucumber Garden Grow Greens

Marinated cucumbers

This salad consists of a faint oily coating on some sliced cucumbers. It was rather bland and disappointing.

Red Fruit Burrata

Caprese salad with balsamic pearls and tomato jelly

This was an average to below-average burrata dish. The cheese is paired with tomato relish and stale chunks of purple bread. It was ok — not great, but at least edible.

Sweet Tuber with Spicy Batuu Curry

Sweet potato curry topped with a granola bar

The curry soup was terrible, but the granola bar was good. Somewhat of a mixed bag for this dish, but overall we would skip it if given the option again.

Entrées

Kaadu Rib Bites

with sweet glaze, spicy slaw, and sesame seeds

Kaadu are livestock animals on Naboo. The Gungans use them as mounts, as seen in “The Phantom Menace.” The Earth equivalent is pork.

These Kaadu ribs are fine; nothing truly spectacular about them but satisfying anyway. They are sure to be a favorite for diners. They are very similar to the kaadu ribs at Docking Bay 7, but cut into individual sections and served with a different, sweeter sauce. The spicy slaw underneath was less pleasant, and tasted like it had been sitting around for a while.

Tamarind-glazed Burra Fish

with longfruit leaf, braised kale, chickpeas, and curry

Burra fish are native to the planet Dathomir, the homeworld of Asajj Ventress, Quinlan Vos, and Darth Maul. Longfruit is the term for bananas.

This was actually a pretty good dish. The fish was nicely cooked, the quinoa was fine, and the braised kale was enjoyable, all with a coconut-based sauce. Chickpeas and corn rounded out the vegetables, making for a well-balanced mix.

Marinated Seared Tofu

with saffron rice, peas, sumac, pickled onions, Kalamata olives, aioli, and flatbread

With the tofu being advertised as seared and crispy, we were unimpressed to find that it was not. We wish it was, because this dish had a lot of potential. The accompanying couscous was good, and even more so with the addition of kalamata olives in the mix.

Blue Foccacia and Sausage Takeaway

with red fruit (tomato) jam and ahi aioli

This sausage was decent, tasting of smoked turkey sausage. The bun was less enjoyable, prompting WDWNT’s own Tom Corless to remark, “I think they’ve outdone themselves. This is the worst Disney food I’ve ever eaten.”

Bantha Beef and Tuber

Beef flatbread with pickled onions, red peppers, cotija cheese, and vinegar herb sauce

Bantha are the large, furry creatures native to Tatooine, most recently seen in “The Book of Boba Fett.” The Earth equivalent to Bantha meat is beef.

This was the best item on the buffet. Short-rib-like chunks of beef, sun-dried tomatoes, and pesto came together in a very enjoyable combination.

Sunflower Butter and Jelly

We thought it would be like a cream puff, but it’s a thin, hard shell. It cracked when we tried to break it. That being said, it was actually very tasty, with a plentiful stash of sunflower butter and jelly inside. This is a huge step up from the Uncrustable sandwiches found all over Walt Disney World.

Dipped Tip Yip Chicken

served with Noodle Cheese

Visitors to Batuu will be familiar with Tip Yip Chicken from Docking Bay 7 Food & Cargo. The Tip Yip is a breed of chicken local to Endor (the forest moon home of the Ewoks, as seen in “Return of the Jedi”).

This has nugget-sized versions of the same dense chicken with a batter breading. The noodles are a bit soggy, and the cheese is a pretty mild flavor. This is the way to go if you are intimidated by some of the other items (or have picky kids).

Desserts

Cream of Jogan

Jogan-fruit mousse with freeze-dried raspberries

Jogan are a round, purple fruit found across the galaxy and used in many desserts.

This was another presentation of a berry mousse, this time on a chocolate cookie with a dollop of a bland whipped cream. The little red things are freeze-dried raspberry pieces. We didn’t care much for this.

Salted Caramel-chocolate Cake

A brownie with salted caramel and dollops of a not-very-sweet mascarpone whipped cheesecake. The brownie was fine, but combined with the salted caramel, it’s quite good. The mascarpone dollops don’t add much, and they sprinkle this green topping over everything and pretend that makes it space-like.

Daily Sweetbread

Chocolate chip cookie

Seems like every buffet needs a familiar comfort food that is actually good. This is it. Soft and buttery, a pleasant surprise how good they were.

Beverages

Blue and Green Milk on Tap

Fountain Soda

Iced Tea

Complimentary espresso, cappuccino, and lattes are available on request (you can order spiked versions as well at an additional cost).

À La Carte Beverages

Morning Concoctions

The Halcyon’s Bloody Rancor (Bloody Mary) – $15

Vodka, golden tomato juice, and Carbonite-dipped Bloody Rancor cubes

SWGS Bloody Rancor

This wasn’t particularly special, and with the exception of the cubes, not an interesting presentation either. If you must have a Bloody Mary, it will fill the need, but otherwise, this isn’t worth getting.

Specialty Alcoholic Cocktails

Mark of the Huntress – $13

Bourbon whiskey, peach-infused Blackcurrant, Orgeat (almond), lemon, and sparkling bubbles

The peach is strong with this one. Really nice fruity flavor, but the bourbon still comes through as the base for this beverage. The orgeat adds just a hint of almond flavor, and the bubbles give only a bit of fizz that gives the drink an unexpected mouthfeel. The garnish is a very thin slice of dehydrated pineapple with a Luxardo cherry. This is the most expensive drink on the menu (we’re not sure why) but very tasty.

Dagobah Vimlet (Vodka Gimlet) – $15

Vodka, herbaceous orange liqueur, lime, and peppercorn

Very alcoholic. Mostly lime and vodka, the herbaceous orange liquor gives a very herbaceous flavor but not much orange. The peppercorns were actually just ground pepper (and very little of it). Did not impart anything to the flavor. Overall, it was ok, but we wouldn’t order it again. However, when we had this again at the Sublight Lounge (in order to get the souvenir cup), it was served with ice which was a big improvement.

Looking for your favorite drink? A note at the bottom of the menu says you just have to ask. In addition to a few selections of beer on tap, rum, vodka, whiskey, bourbon, gin, tequila, and vermouth are always stocked.

Overall

Lunch today was even more disappointing than on the first day. There were a few good choices here, but instead of average fare otherwise, many dishes were outright bad. We were glad we had a full lunch on Batuu earlier.
