The Disney Collaboration That Could CHANGE the Way Weather is Handled in the Parks

We’ve all been there. You’ve just arrived to the park to have a great day when you feel a drop… and then you hear the distant roll of thunder. Before you know it, you’re caught in a thunderstorm and there’s no end in sight. “But there was no rain in the forecast!!” you say. And OF COURSE this is the day you didn’t pack your umbrella and rain gear. 🌧

The weather in Florida can be a bit…unpredictable at times. But a new partnership could make handling the weather just a tiny bit easier!

Today, WeatherFlow-Tempest (a company focused on weather technology) announced a partnership with Disney Parks, Experiences and Products to create more advanced “weather-based products and decision support tools.” News of the partnership was shared via PR Newswire.

If you’re reading this, you’re likely very familiar with what Disney does, but what about WeatherFlow-Tempest? Well, WeatherFlow-Tempest “helps individual, business, and government customers mitigate the enormous impact of weather through point-specific weather information, automated alerts, and intelligent forecasting.”

Together, the two companies strive to create better predictive-weather services and products that can be used in situations where weather is a factor when making decisions, like the Disney parks. It sounds like some of this new technology could help in Disney’s operational planning potentially for making decisions on when rides need to shut down due to thunder, when a show needs to be cancelled due to windy conditions, when a parade or other entertainment offering needs to be postponed or canceled due to weather, etc.

In the press release, the companies note that Disney has experience in managing “complex” outdoor events and entertainment offerings while also monitoring situations to ensure guest safety, and WeatherFlow-Tempest will bring its “innovative hardware, unrivaled data collection and AI-based weather modeling” to the equation.

By combining the two, it “will enable the development of products and services that provide a new caliber of predictive weather data and decision support,” said Greg Hale, Chief Safety Officer and Vice President of Worldwide Safety and Assurance Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

Rain, rain, go away

According to Buck Lyons, CEO of WeatherFlow-Tempest,This joint effort will combine that know-how with our cutting-edge data collection and forecasting capabilities to develop powerful tools that will enhance decision-making around the weather. The collaboration will improve the experience for all of our customers, from theme parks to small businesses to families in their homes.”

No information was provided regarding a timeline for this technology or more specific details of what it would include. We’ll continue to keep an eye out for more updates and let you know what we find.
